Are you confused about the latest update with Facebook and the 20% rule?
The latest updates affect your cover images and it is important to know that non-compliance can result in Facebook closing your page down. Would they actually do that? I don’t know, but let’s not take the chance.
In the Facebook Guidelines, it clearly states that Cover “All covers are public. This means that anyone who visits your Page will be able to see your cover. Covers can’t be deceptive, misleading, or infringe on anyone else’s copyright. You may not encourage people to upload your cover to their personal timelines. Covers may not include images with more than 20% text”
Here is a free tool that will help you determine if you have more than 20% text on your cover image: you put your Facebook page ID in the box in the lower left side. Once you see your cover image in the box, start clicking over the boxes that show text and the grader will show you what % of text you have. If your current cover image has more than 20% of text – best get it changed? (maybe it’s time for a new image anyway)

Thanks JoAnne,
I guess my cover is more that 20%. I will have to re-do
it is a great tool isn’t it? :Lots of page images have to be re-done
yes it is but I am tired of face book always changing something. It is a business page and we should be allowed to have more than 20% words wouldn’t you agree?
yes I would agree!
Do you know why they made this change? As a marketing person what are some suggestions you would give for this change? What should we have in this new cover design? For instance I practice women’s health and that is what my business page is about- any suggestions? Thanks so much Michele
Michele, I’m told Facebook made the change so business pages don’t look so “salesy” – I recommend cover images that are representative of your business & who you serve. It’s ok to have some text that conveys your core message. thanks for asking
Thanks JoAnne,
I appreciate the advice. Blessings Michele
